“I’m on a journey. It’s my journey and I’m okay.” Girls

Hello! My name is Courtney Heffernan. I’m from Oakville, Ontario and I currently live in Vancouver, British Columbia.

I like basketball, burritos and music. I’m always looking to discover new artists and new places. I often ask myself, What would Hunter S. Thompson do? I believe in the importance of telling people how much they mean to me and in the power of self-love.

I started I’m on a Journey in 2013 to write about quotidian experiences that are often overlooked. I told stories about disastrous childhood trips to IKEA and Lambton Mall, about failed pickup attempts and gestures misread in Saturday night bars, and about what I had learned by the end of four years of undergrad.

I’m on a Journey has changed a bit since I started it to better reflect my interests and my learning. I finished a Master’s in English Literature in spring 2016. I wrote my thesis on Kendrick Lamar’s representation of racism and its accompanying social issues on his three studio albums, with To Pimp a Butterfly as my main focus. I am interested in the intersection between popular culture and sociology, and in music and literature as reflections of social relations and contemporary issues and events. My favourite piece I have written for I’m on a Journey was Nicki Minaj, Taylor Swift, and Conversations on Race and Feminism.

I still tell stories about my awkward dating life so everyone can share a laugh with me, and about feeling imposter syndrome in grad school so those who are going through it know they are not alone.

I write album and show reviews for Discorder Magazine. My story about my upstairs neighbours and their acoustic cover band was published on Man Repeller, my favourite website.

All photos and drawings on I’m on a Journey are my own, unless otherwise credited.

All the best on your own journey. I’ll be here if you need me.

Love,
Courtney

Manifesto

I believe we are all on a journey and how we appreciate our journey determines our destination.

I believe in the power of self-love, especially when it’s difficult.

I believe in wearing what makes you happy.

I believe in surrounding yourself with people who bring out the best in you.

I believe in the San Antonio Spurs, despite culturally identifying as a Toronto Raptors fan.

I believe the little things can have the most impact, like the people you meet in passing, the unexpected places you end up, and the songs you listen to ten times in a row.

I believe in you. I probably believe in me, too.
