As a self-described grunge/funk/pop band, Lady HD works in several genres at once. The amalgam of genres befits the duo from opposite coasts of the United States: songwriter Ciaran Wall is from Philadelphia, a city known from its funk and soul scene, and producer Dusty Moon is from Los Angeles. While the band’s previous four single releases were predominantly pop songs with funk elements, their latest single B-Side Love is a rock song driven by a chorus of fuzzy guitar riffs.
B-Side Love is multifaceted, with tonal shifts throughout the song. The track builds steadily from its opening bassline, with subsequent elements coming in distinctly: first vocals, then drums, and lastly subdued guitar. Through Lady HD refer to their particular breed of rock as grunge, the guitar on the chorus is in the vein of psychedelic rock.
Each of Lady HD’s previous singles include a bridge that is an unexpected instrumental departure from the song’s verse and chorus structure. (The saxophone solo in the final minute of Inca Queen is the quintessential example.) In the latter half of B-Side Love, the guitar gives way to waves of dreamy synth. While it is an unexpected departure from the heavier sound on the chorus, it is still in congruence with the rest of the song. Taken as a whole, the distinct elements in B-Side Love come together in an immersive track that makes a compelling addition to Lady HD’s growing catalogue.
